3minGerman & the "Learn German — Dual Subtitles for YouTube" browser extension · Last updated: July 2026
3minGerman shows dual subtitles on YouTube videos and helps you learn the words you see. This policy explains what the extension and the web app access, what is sent where, and why.
What the extension accesses
- YouTube captions of the video you're watching — to display the two subtitle lines and to color/define words.
- Your 3minGerman.com sign-in status — to verify you have an account (the extension only works while signed in). It checks this by calling 3minGerman.com; it never reads your password.
- Your account profile (email and display name) — stored locally in your browser so the extension can show who is signed in. It is read from your 3minGerman.com session and is not shared with anyone else.
- The videos you watch with the extension — the YouTube video ID of each video you use it on is recorded, to count your free videos and to build your learning history.
- Your settings and sign-in state — stored locally in your browser.
What is sent, and where
When you use the extension, the following may be sent only to provide the feature you triggered:
- Subtitle text → to the word-tagging service, to color words by part of speech.
- A clicked word and its sentence → to translation/dictionary services, to show its meaning, synonyms and definition.
- Words you click → saved to your 3minGerman account as your personal vocabulary, so the app can build your word list, quizzes and reviews.
- Subtitle files of videos you watch → may be contributed to 3minGerman's shared subtitle store, so the same video loads instantly for every learner. This contains only the public captions — nothing about you.
What we never do
- The extension only runs on YouTube. It cannot read or change data on any other website you visit — it activates on youtube.com pages, plus a small invisible sign-in check on our own 3mingerman.com.
- We do not sell personal data.
- We do not track your browsing outside youtube.com and 3mingerman.com.
- We do not transmit your YouTube account details.
The 3minGerman web app
Your account (email), watched-video history, tapped words and quiz results are stored to power your learning features (history, progress, reviews). They are visible only to you and are never shared with third parties beyond the infrastructure providers that host the service (AWS, Stripe for payments).
Data retention & deletion
The extension caches lookups temporarily and stores your settings locally — uninstalling removes them. Account data is kept while your account exists; to delete your account and all associated data, email us and we'll remove it.
