German Accessories & Jewellery Vocabulary

This set covers the things you wear or carry: der Ring, die Kette, die Mütze, der Hut, and die Brille all show up here, alongside less obvious entries like der Edelstein (gem) and die Rüstung (armor, for when the vocabulary wanders into knights and costumes). One trap for English speakers: die Tasche means both "bag" and "pocket," so a Handtasche and a Hosentasche are built the same way but end up as two very different objects.

How to learn this set

Notice how many words here are feminine: die Tasche, die Brille, die Kette, die Mütze, die Krone, die Perücke, die Rüstung, die Geldbörse. If you default to "die" for any accessory or piece of headwear/jewelry you're not sure about, you'll be right more often than wrong, with der Ring, der Hut, der Schirm, and der Handschuh as your main exceptions to flag separately. For the armor cluster, drill die Rüstung and die Ritterrüstung together since one is just the other with a Ritter- (knight) prefix bolted on, and do the same with das Visier and der Helm-type vocabulary if it appears elsewhere in your deck.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Brieftasche and Geldbörse?

Both mean wallet, and in everyday speech Germans use them interchangeably. If you want to be precise, Brieftasche is the flatter, bifold style, while Geldbörse (or just Börse) tends to mean a smaller coin-and-card purse.

Is die Tasche a bag or a pocket?

Both. Die Tasche covers a handbag, shopping bag, or backpack, but it's also the word for a pocket in your trousers or jacket. Context tells you which one is meant.

Why is das Tuch neuter when most clothing words are die?

Tuch just doesn't follow the pattern you'd expect from words like die Mütze or die Kette. There's no shortcut here: das Tuch is one to memorize on its own, and it covers everything from a headscarf to a simple cloth.
