German Law & Justice Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of courts and legal proceedings: der Richter (judge), der Angeklagte (defendant), das Urteil (verdict), and die Berufung (appeal). One trap for English speakers is der Prozess: it means "trial" in the legal sense, but also "process" in general, so a Gerichtsprozess is a court case while ein langer Prozess can just mean a lengthy procedure with no judge in sight. Another is der Beklagter, which looks like it should mean "the accuser" but actually means "the defendant" in a civil case, the opposite of what the root anklagen (to accuse) might suggest.

How to learn this set
Several nouns here share the same root but shift meaning through prefix and form: die Klage, der Angeklagte, der Beklagter, and die Anklage all come from klagen, so once you know that root means "to complain/sue," the others fall into place by noticing whether an- (charge) or be- (defend against a charge) is attached. Watch der Zeuge / die Zeugin as a pair, since almost every person-noun in this list has a matching feminine form you'll need for listening comprehension in real court reporting. For the abstract nouns like das Ermessen, die Auslegung, and die Forderung, drill them in short phrases (nach eigenem Ermessen, eine Forderung stellen) rather than as isolated words, since their usage is tied to fixed collocations in legal German.

What is the difference between der Prozess and der Gerichtsprozess?
Der Prozess by itself can mean any process, while der Gerichtsprozess specifically means a court trial. In everyday legal contexts Germans often just say Prozess and rely on context to signal that a trial is meant.
Why is der Beklagter the defendant and not the accuser?
The be- prefix in German often marks the party something is done to, so der Beklagter is literally the one being sued or charged, not the one bringing the charge. The person making the accusation is covered by anklagen and die Anklage instead.
Is der Angeklagte the same as der Beklagter?
No, der Angeklagte is used in criminal cases (the accused facing charges), while der Beklagter is the term for a defendant in a civil lawsuit. German keeps this distinction separate where English just uses "defendant" for both.
