German Illness & Symptoms Vocabulary
This set covers everyday illness talk: das Fieber, die Erkältung, die Grippe, and the verb husten for coughing. The trap here is erkältet sein: English speakers want to say "ich habe eine Erkältung" or reach for a verb like "to cold," but German treats being sick with a cold as a state you're in, not something you have, so it's ich bin erkältet, not ich habe.

How to learn this set
Notice that erkälten shows up three times in different forms (erkältet sein, war erkältet, ist erkältet gewesen) because this is one of the few illness verbs that's reflexive and takes sein, not haben, in the perfect tense: sich erkälten becomes ist erkältet gewesen, not hat. Drill this one specifically by conjugating it across present, past, and perfect before moving on. Separately, group die Krankheit, die Erkältung, die Grippe, die Infektion, and der Durchfall together as a mini noun-gender set: most illness nouns ending in -heit, -ung, or borrowed from Latin/French (Grippe, Infektion) are feminine, and der Durchfall breaks the pattern as a clear exception worth memorizing on its own.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Erkältung and Grippe in German?
Die Erkältung is a common cold, the kind of thing that clears up in a few days. Die Grippe is the flu, a heavier viral illness with fever and body aches. Germans keep these separate the way English speakers do with 'cold' and 'flu', so don't use Grippe for a minor sniffle.
What is the difference between krank and Krankheit?
Krank is the adjective, 'sick' or 'ill', used with sein: ich bin krank. Die Krankheit is the noun, 'illness' or 'disease', the thing you have. You say Ich bin krank but Das ist eine schwere Krankheit.
How do you say 'I have a cold' in German?
The standard phrase is Ich bin erkältet, literally 'I am colded'. You can also say Ich habe einen Schnupfen if you mean specifically a runny or stuffed nose.
