German Dairy & Eggs Vocabulary

This set covers milk products and eggs, from basics like die Milch and der Käse to specific types like der Quark and die Buttermilch. One trap for English speakers: der Quark has no real English equivalent, it's a fresh curd cheese, tangier and thicker than yogurt but not aged like cheese, so don't just translate it as "cheese" or "yogurt."

How to learn this set

Notice how many words here are just die Milch with a prefix attached: Vollmilch (whole), Magermilch (skim), Buttermilch (butter-), Kondensmilch (condensed). Learn Milch cold first, then the four compounds fall into place almost for free. Separately, drill das Ei with its irregular plural die Eier, and split das Eigelb from das Eiweiß by remembering gelb (yellow) and weiß (white) are the color words hiding inside them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Quark and Frischkäse?

Quark is a fresh curd cheese with a tart, slightly sour taste and almost no fat unless labeled otherwise; Germans eat it plain, sweetened, or in cheesecake. Frischkäse is closer to English cream cheese: milder, smoother, and usually spread on bread.

Why is das Ei neuter?

German noun gender doesn't follow logic you can predict from English, and das Ei is simply one of the neuter ones. The plural, die Eier, is worth memorizing alongside it since it doesn't just add -s.

Is Sahne the same as Schlagsahne?

Sahne is the general word for cream, the kind you pour into coffee or sauces. Schlagsahne is specifically cream with enough fat to whip, so if a recipe says to beat it into peaks, that's the one you buy.
