German Describing Food & Taste Vocabulary
This set covers the words you need to talk about food, hunger, and flavor in German, from basic taste adjectives like süß and sauer to related nouns like der Appetit and der Durst. One trap for English speakers: schmecken doesn't just mean "to taste" in the neutral sense, it usually implies tasting good, so "Es schmeckt" on its own means "It tastes good," not just "it has a flavor." Also watch scharf, which covers both "sharp" (a knife) and "spicy" (a chili), a distinction English keeps separate.

How to learn this set
Several nouns here are built directly from verbs or adjectives you already have: der Geschmack comes from schmecken, die Ernährung comes from ernähren, and der Hunger gives you hungrig the same way der Durst gives you durstig. Drill these as pairs rather than separate words, since knowing one basically hands you the other for free. For the taste adjectives (bitter, sauer, süß, salzig, mild, scharf), practice them by sorting real foods into categories out loud, it forces you to actually retrieve the word instead of just recognizing it on a flashcard. Note that gar, roh, and reif look like simple opposites but describe different things (cooked-through, uncooked, and ripe-on-the-tree respectively), so don't lump them into one "raw vs. cooked" pair.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between scharf and sauer?
Scharf means spicy or sharp-tasting, like a hot pepper or a sharp knife. Sauer means sour or acidic, like a lemon or unripe fruit. They're not interchangeable even though English sometimes uses 'sharp' loosely for both flavors.
Does schmecken mean the same as 'to taste' in English?
Not quite. 'Es schmeckt' by itself means 'it tastes good.' If you want to say something merely has a flavor without judging it, you'd say 'Es schmeckt nach...' (it tastes like...) or add an adjective.
Is Nahrungsmittel the everyday word for 'food'?
No, das Nahrungsmittel is more formal or technical, the kind of word you'd see on nutrition labels or in official contexts. In casual speech, Germans usually just say Essen for food.
