German Sports & Games Vocabulary
This set covers the basic vocabulary of talking about sports and games in German, including der Wettbewerb (competition), der Sieg (victory), and the verb teilnehmen (to participate). One trap here: German has three separate verbs for what English flattens into "participate" - teilnehmen, mitmachen, and beteiligen - and picking the wrong one sounds off even when technically understood.

How to learn this set
Notice how siegen, der Sieg, der Sieger, and die Siegerin all share the same root, so learning one gives you the other three almost for free. The same happens with Spieler/Spielerin, built directly off spielen. When you drill teilnehmen, mitmachen, and beteiligen, practice them with their required prepositions (an, bei, an) rather than alone, since the preposition is what actually separates them in real sentences.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between teilnehmen, mitmachen, and beteiligen in German?
All three mean 'participate' but differ in tone. Teilnehmen (with an) is the neutral, most common choice, mitmachen (with bei) is casual and used for everyday activities like a game, and sich beteiligen (with an) suggests contributing actively to something bigger, like an effort or discussion.
Is der Sieg the same as gewinnen?
No. Gewinnen is the verb 'to win', while der Sieg is the noun 'victory'. You say 'Wir haben gewonnen' (we won) but 'Das war ein großer Sieg' (that was a big victory).
Why is das Team neuter in German if team sounds English?
Das Team is a borrowed word, and German assigns most English loanwords like this the neuter gender by default. The native equivalent die Mannschaft is feminine, so don't let the borrowed word mislead you about German gender patterns generally.
