German Bus, Tram & Underground Vocabulary
This set covers the words you need to actually get around a German city: der Bus, die Straßenbahn, and die U-Bahn, plus the practical vocabulary around them like die Haltestelle and der Fahrkartenautomat. One trap here is der Nahverkehr, which doesn't mean "near traffic" but the whole system of local public transport, and it shows up constantly on tickets and signs even though its literal parts might mislead you.

How to learn this set
Notice that almost every compound in this set ends in a word that fixes its gender: anything with -bahn (die S-Bahn, die U-Bahn, die Straßenbahn) is feminine, and anything with -station (die Endstation, die Station) is also feminine. That leaves der Bus, der Fahrkartenautomat, der Sitzplatz, and der Nahverkehr as the masculine outliers worth memorizing on their own. When you drill die Haltestelle, picture it as halten (to stop) plus die Stelle (the spot), which makes both the meaning and the gender easier to hold onto.

Frequently asked questions
Was ist der Unterschied zwischen der S-Bahn und der U-Bahn?
The S-Bahn (Schnellbahn) is a commuter train running mostly above ground and connecting a city to its wider region, while the U-Bahn (Untergrundbahn) is the underground metro within a city. Both use the same ticket zones in most German cities, so a Monatskarte usually covers either.
Ist Tram und Straßenbahn dasselbe?
Yes, they refer to the same vehicle. Straßenbahn is the standard word used across Germany, while das Tram shows up mainly in southern Germany and Switzerland.
Warum heißt es die Straßenbahn aber das Tram?
They're two separate words with separate genders rather than one word with a variable article: die Straßenbahn is feminine because -bahn words almost always are, and das Tram is neuter simply as a borrowed word that took its own gender when it entered German.
