German Traffic & Road Signs Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you need to talk about driving in Germany: die Ampel, der Stau, and die Vorfahrt are the words that come up constantly, whether you're listening to traffic reports or reading a Strafzettel someone got. One trap here is das Tempo: it means speed or pace generally, not "temperature" or a fixed rate, and it's not the word used in "speed limit" (that's die Geschwindigkeitsbeschränkung, built from a different root).

How to learn this set
Notice that most of these nouns are feminine: die Ampel, die Autobahn, die Ausfahrt, die Kurve, die Spur, die Umleitung, die Vorfahrt. If you're guessing gender on a word you haven't seen, "die" is the safer bet in this particular set. Also look at how compounds stack: Geschwindigkeit (speed) plus Beschränkung (restriction) gives you Geschwindigkeitsbeschränkung, and Verkehr (traffic) plus Zeichen (sign) gives you Verkehrszeichen. Once you know Geschwindigkeit and Verkehr solidly, the longer compounds stop being scary and start being predictable.

Die Ampel is specifically a traffic light. Das Verkehrszeichen is the broader category of traffic signs, including speed limits, warning triangles, and stop signs.
Is Autobahn just the German word for highway?
Roughly yes, but Autobahn specifically means a controlled-access motorway built for higher speeds, closer to what English speakers call a freeway or expressway than a generic country road.
