German Boats & Ships Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you need to talk about ships, harbours, and life on board: das Schiff, die Fähre, der Hafen, and the more specialized der Lastkahn (barge) and das Geschwader (a naval squadron or fleet). One thing to watch: die Kombüse is the ship's kitchen (English "caboose" is a false friend here, since that word means the train car in American English, not a galley).

How to learn this set
Several nouns here name parts of a ship's interior: die Kajüte (cabin), die Koje (bunk), der Laderaum (hold), die Kombüse (galley). Learning them together as "rooms on a ship" fixes their genders faster than memorizing each in isolation. On the verb side, group kentern, docken, entern, and vertäuen by what actually happens to the boat: capsizing, arriving, boarding, mooring, since German keeps these as distinct, non-overlapping verbs where English sometimes uses one word ("to tie up") for several actions. Also note bugsieren and verfrachten share the sense of moving something by force or by cargo, so contrast them directly: bugsieren is physically pushing/steering a vessel, verfrachten is shipping goods off as freight.

It works much like English: das Boot is small and often open (a canoe, a rowboat), das Schiff is large and ocean-going. A das Kanu is a Boot, but a container vessel is always a Schiff, never a Boot.
