In short
Use kein to negate a noun that would take ein/eine or no article at all — Ich habe kein Auto. Use nicht for everything else: verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns with der, die or das — Ich fahre nicht.
How it works
German has two negation words where English has one, and choosing between them is easier than it looks because the test is entirely mechanical. Look at what you are negating; the answer follows.
Kein negates nouns — specifically, nouns that in the positive sentence would carry ein or eine, or no article at all. Ich habe ein Auto becomes Ich habe kein Auto. Sie hat Zeit becomes Sie hat keine Zeit. Wir haben Geld becomes Wir haben kein Geld. Kein takes the same endings as ein, so it is keine with feminine and plural nouns.
Nicht negates everything else: verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and any noun that carries a definite article. Ich fahre nicht. Er ist nicht müde. Ich lese das Buch nicht. Note the position in that last example — when nicht negates a whole sentence with a definite object, it goes at the end. So the test is: would the positive sentence use ein, eine or nothing? Then kein. Anything else? Then nicht.

Mistakes to avoid
✗ Ich habe nicht Auto.
✓ Ich habe kein Auto.
The commonest negation error. Auto would take ein in the positive, so it must take kein in the negative.
✗ Ich lese kein das Buch.
✓ Ich lese das Buch nicht.
A definite article blocks kein. With der, die or das, use nicht — and it goes at the end.
✗ Sie hat kein Zeit.
✓ Sie hat keine Zeit.
Zeit is feminine, so kein needs its -e. Kein takes exactly the endings ein takes.
✗ Ich trinke kein Kaffee.
✓ Ich trinke keinen Kaffee.
Kaffee is masculine and here it is the object, so kein becomes keinen — the accusative (lesson 26).

Kulturnotiz
German has no equivalent of the English double negative used for emphasis — "I don't have no money" is not just wrong but genuinely confusing, because two negatives in German cancel out logically. What German does have instead is a rich set of softening words: eigentlich, eher, nicht so ganz. Where an English speaker might soften a "no" with tone, a German speaker adds a word.

Ask what the positive sentence would look like. If the noun would take ein, eine or no article, use kein. In every other case use nicht.
+Where does nicht go in the sentence?
Before what it negates — nicht müde, nicht oft. When it negates the whole sentence and there is a definite object, it goes at the end: Ich lese das Buch nicht.
+Does kein change its form?
Yes, exactly as ein does: kein Auto, keine Zeit, keinen Kaffee, keine Kinder. If you know the ein endings you already know the kein endings.
+What is the difference between nichts and nicht?
Nicht is "not", a negation word. Nichts is "nothing", a pronoun standing in for a thing. Ich sehe nicht means I do not see; Ich sehe nichts means I see nothing.
