German Days of the Week Vocabulary
This set covers the seven days of the week, from der Montag to der Sonntag, plus the words German uses to talk about time in general: die Woche, der Werktag, and the useful am Wochenende. One thing to watch for: German turns each day name into an adverb just by adding -s and lowercasing it, so der Dienstag (Tuesday) becomes dienstags (on Tuesdays), a distinction English handles with a whole preposition phrase instead of one word.

How to learn this set
All seven day names are masculine: der Montag, der Dienstag, der Mittwoch, and the rest, so you can learn "der" once and stop worrying about gender for this whole set. Notice the pattern between the capitalized day and its lowercase -s cousin: der Montag becomes montags, der Freitag becomes freitags. Drill these as pairs rather than as separate words, since the lowercase form always means "on [day]s" or "every [day]." Once that pattern clicks for two or three days, the rest follow automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Is it der Samstag or der Sonnabend?
Both are correct and mean Saturday. Der Samstag is standard across most of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, while der Sonnabend is used mainly in northern and eastern Germany, including Berlin.
How do you say 'on Mondays' in German?
Add an -s to the day and don't capitalize it: montags for on Mondays, dienstags for on Tuesdays, and so on through sonntags. This -s form covers the English 'every Monday' or 'on Mondays' in one word.
What is the difference between der Tag and der Wochentag?
Der Tag just means day in general, any day at all. Der Wochentag specifically means weekday, one of the five days from Monday to Friday, as opposed to the weekend.
