German How Often — Frequency Vocabulary

This set covers how German marks frequency, from the basics like immer, nie, and manchmal to finer shades like meistens and selten. The trap for English speakers is einmal: it looks like it should mean something about oneness, but it just means once, and jedes Mal (every time) uses the same Mal pattern rather than a separate word like English has for time-in-this-sense.

How to learn this set

Notice how many of these words share the -mal root: einmal, jedes Mal, noch mal, nochmals, and abermals all build on Mal (occasion/time). Once you see that pattern, you can guess new ones instead of memorizing each separately. A second cluster worth drilling together is dauernd, ständig, and fortlaufend, which all translate as constant or ongoing but differ in tone: dauernd often implies mild annoyance (dauernd klingelt das Telefon), ständig is neutral and common, and fortlaufend is the formal/technical choice you'd see in a contract or a numbering system. Practice by putting five of these on a frequency line from nie to immer (nie, selten, manchmal, oft, meistens, immer) and ranking new example sentences on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between oft and häufig?

Both mean often, and in most sentences they're interchangeable. Häufig is a bit more formal and shows up more in writing or statistics, while oft is the everyday word you'd use in conversation.

What is the difference between wieder and noch mal?

Wieder means again in the sense of a repeated state or action (er ist wieder da - he's here again), while noch mal is what you say when asking for something to be repeated right now, like noch mal, bitte for one more time. Nochmals is a more formal written version of noch mal, often seen in apologies like ich möchte mich nochmals entschuldigen.

Is niemals stronger than nie?

Niemals is an emphatic version of nie, roughly like never ever versus never. They're grammatically interchangeable, but niemals adds weight, so nie wieder and niemals wieder both work but niemals hits harder.
