German Discounts & Bargains Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you actually see on price tags and shop signs in Germany: das Schnäppchen for a bargain, der Rabatt for a discount, and das Sonderangebot for a special offer. One trap for English speakers is die Aktion, which almost never means "action" in this context, it means a sale or promotion, so im Angebot or in der Aktion both signal a markdown.

How to learn this set
Notice how many of these words stack as compounds built on Preis or Verkauf: das Preisschild, der Preisnachlass, der Ausverkauf, der Schlussverkauf, der Verkaufsschlager. Once you know Preis means price and Verkauf means sale, you can guess the rest of the compound from context, so drill the base words first and then the combinations. Also group der Rabatt, der Rabattcode, and die Ermäßigung together since they all describe a price cut but apply in different situations, one general, one code-based, one personal. For gender, most of these are der-words tied to concrete shop objects or actions, so it's worth memorizing das Angebot and das Schnäppchen as the neuter exceptions to anchor them separately.

Is Aktion the same as action in English?
No, this is a false friend. In a shop context, in der Aktion or im Angebot means an item is on sale or part of a promotion, not that anything is happening physically.
What's the difference between Ausverkauf and Schlussverkauf?
Ausverkauf usually means a clearance sale, often because a shop is closing down or emptying stock, while Schlussverkauf refers to the traditional seasonal sales at the end of winter or summer. Restposten is the leftover stock that often ends up in exactly this kind of sale.
