German Saving & Investing Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of personal finance and the stock market: sparen (to save), die Zinsen (interest), die Beteiligung (a stake), der Aktienkurs (a stock price). One trap here is die Zinsen: it's always plural in German even when you mean "interest" as a general concept, so "the interest is low" becomes die Zinsen sind niedrig, not the singular you'd expect from English.

How to learn this set
Several words share the root Anlage/anlegen (die Anlagestrategie, der Anleger) or Aktie (der Aktienhandel, der Aktienkurs) - once you know Aktie means "share/stock," the compounds just add Handel (trade) or Kurs (price/rate) on top, so drill those two roots as building blocks rather than memorizing each compound separately. Also pair up near-synonyms that trip people up: die Ersparnis (a concrete saved amount) versus sparen (the act of saving), and die Investition versus der Investor (the thing invested versus the person investing). For gender, notice that most of the abstract finance nouns ending in -ung or -ion are feminine (die Abschreibung, die Amortisation, die Investition), which covers a good chunk of this list in one rule.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between die Ersparnis and das Einkommen?
Das Einkommen is what you earn (income), while die Ersparnis is what's left over and set aside after spending - the actual saved amount. You can have a high Einkommen and still have zero Ersparnisse.
Is der Anleger the same as der Investor?
They're close synonyms for 'investor,' but der Investor is used more, especially for larger or institutional investors, while der Anleger is the more general/older term and, as noted in this list, is less commonly used in everyday speech today.
Why is die Zinsen plural in German?
German treats interest as inherently countable, referring to the accumulated amounts over time, so it defaults to the plural die Zinsen even when English would say 'the interest rate is low' in the singular.
