German Happiness & Joy Vocabulary
This set covers the German range from mild contentment to full ecstasy: glücklich, froh, and vergnügt all translate as "happy," but they sit at different points on that scale. One trap for English speakers is das Glück, which means both "luck" and "happiness" at once, so Ich habe Glück can mean "I'm lucky" or "I'm happy," depending on context. Another is gefallen, a false-friend-adjacent verb that flips the sentence structure English uses: Das gefällt mir literally means "that pleases me," not "I like that."

How to learn this set
Group glücklich, froh, fröhlich, and vergnügt together and rank them by intensity rather than treating them as synonyms: froh tends to attach to a specific reason ("froh, dass..."), while glücklich and fröhlich describe a general state or personality. Watch the noun genders here too, since die Freude and die Ekstase are both feminine while das Glück is neuter, so der Glück is a mistake worth drilling out early. For the C1 words like berauschen, anfachen, and selig, learn them inside a fixed phrase (sich an etwas berauschen, ein Feuer anfachen) rather than as standalone translations, since their real use is narrower than the dictionary gloss suggests.

What is the difference between glücklich and froh in German?
Froh usually points to a specific cause, as in froh, dass du hier bist (glad that you're here), while glücklich describes a broader, longer-lasting state of happiness, including as a personality trait. You can be froh about one thing without being a glücklich person overall.
Does Glück mean luck or happiness in German?
Both. Das Glück covers luck and happiness at once, so Ich habe Glück gehabt means "I got lucky," while Ich bin voller Glück means "I'm full of happiness." Context tells you which sense is meant.
Why does gefallen work backwards from the English verb like?
Gefallen puts the thing being liked as the subject and the person as an object in the dative, so Der Film gefällt mir literally reads "the film pleases me." It's the same structure as mögen but built around what causes the pleasure rather than who feels it.
