German Trust & Honesty Vocabulary
This set works through the German vocabulary of trust and its breakdown, from das Vertrauen itself down to der Verdacht and verraten. English speakers often assume der Argwohn and das Misstrauen-adjacent words map onto one English "suspicion," but German splits the concept into der Verdacht (a specific suspicion, often toward one person or event) and der Argwohn (a more general, wary distrust of character). There's also die Gefolgschaft, which sits closer to "allegiance" or "following a leader" than the more personal die Loyalität.

How to learn this set
Several nouns here share the -heit/-ung/-tät abstract-noun pattern and are all feminine: die Aufrichtigkeit, die Loyalität, die Integrität, die Überzeugung. If you learn that these endings are reliably "die," you get four genders for free. Also drill argwöhnisch and verdächtig side by side since they're near-synonyms with different roots (Argwohn vs. Verdacht) but nearly interchangeable in everyday use. For verraten, practice it in both senses: "er hat mich verraten" (he betrayed me) and "verrate mir dein Geheimnis" (reveal your secret to me), since English speakers tend to only reach for the first meaning.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between der Verdacht and der Argwohn?
Der Verdacht is a concrete suspicion, usually pointed at a specific person or situation, like suspecting someone of a crime. Der Argwohn is a more general, ongoing wariness or distrust of someone's character.
Is Loyalität the same as Treue in German?
They overlap but aren't identical: treu and die Treue lean toward personal faithfulness (to a partner, friend, or promise), while die Loyalität is broader and often used for loyalty to a group, company, or cause.
Why is Notlüge not just Lüge?
Eine Notlüge specifically means a white lie, one told to avoid hurting someone or to get out of an awkward situation, whereas eine Lüge is just any lie, regardless of intent.
