German Buildings & Architecture Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you need to describe buildings from the ground up, literally: der Eingang and der Ausgang get you in and out, das Dach sits on top, and die Mauer holds it all together. One trap for English speakers is der Stock versus das Stockwerk versus die Etage: all three can mean "floor" but German building-numbering starts counting at das Erdgeschoss (ground floor), so der erste Stock is what an American would call the second floor.

How to learn this set
Several words here cluster around structural parts that come straight from architecture terminology: der Pfeiler (pillar), das Gewölbe (vault), die Arkade (arcade), and die Balustrade (railing) are the kind of words you'd use describing a cathedral or old town hall, so picture a specific building when you drill them rather than memorizing them in isolation. Notice also that der Turm, der Pfeiler, and der Durchbruch are all masculine, while most of the abstract or decorative structural nouns (die Fassade, die Arkade, die Balustrade) came into German from French and kept feminine gender, a pattern worth flagging since gender for loanwords is otherwise unpredictable. For the entrance/exit pair, drill der Eingang and der Ausgang together as opposites rather than separately, since you'll almost always encounter them side by side on signs anyway.

What is the difference between der Stockwerk and die Etage in German?
Both mean floor/storey and are used interchangeably in everyday speech, but note Stockwerk is neuter (das Stockwerk) while Etage is feminine (die Etage). Etage sounds slightly more formal and appears often on building directories and elevator panels.
Is der Aufzug the same as der Lift?
Yes, both mean elevator and refer to the same thing. Aufzug is more common in standard German overall, while Lift is used more in Austria and Switzerland and in casual speech.
Why is das Erdgeschoss floor 0 and not floor 1?
In German-speaking countries, das Erdgeschoss (ground floor) is not counted as das erste Stockwerk. The first floor above it is der erste Stock, so what English speakers call the "second floor" is often just the first floor in German building numbering.
