German Medicine & Treatment Vocabulary
This set covers what's in the medicine cabinet and what happens at the pharmacy: die Tablette, die Salbe, der Balsam, and die Spritze alongside the verbs that describe what medicine actually does, wirken and abschwellen. Watch out for das Gift: it looks like it should mean "gift" but actually means "poison," which is exactly the kind of mix-up that trips up English speakers reaching for der Gift instead of das Gift.

How to learn this set
Most of the nouns here split into two clear groups: the "container" words (die Tablette, die Pille, die Spritze) that are almost all feminine, and the substance words (das Medikament, das Mittel, das Gift) that are neuter. Drilling by that gender split will help more than random order, since German pattern this consistently by whether the word names a form or a substance. Pay separate attention to the verb pair wirken and abschwellen: wirken tells you medicine is having an effect at all, abschwellen tells you specifically that swelling is going down, and mixing them up is a common learner mistake. For das Gegengift and die Entwöhnung, notice the prefixes doing real work: Gegen- (against) gives you antidote, and Ent- (removal/undoing) gives you the process of breaking a habit or withdrawal.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Medikament and Medizin in German?
Medikament means a specific medicine or drug you take, like a pill or syrup. Medizin usually refers to the field of medicine (as in the science) or is used loosely in speech for medicine in general, but when you mean 'take your medicine', Medikament is the safer, more precise choice.
Is Gift the German word for gift?
No, Gift means poison in German, not a present. It's one of the classic false friends between English and German, and it's also where giftig (poisonous) comes from.
What does die Tropfen mean and why is it plural?
Tropfen means drops, as in medicinal drops you count out with a dropper, and it's typically used in the plural because you take more than one at a time (die Tropfen). The singular der Tropfen just means a single drop of liquid.
