German Organs & Inside the Body Vocabulary
This set covers the organs and internal systems German uses to talk about the body: der Magen, das Herz, die Bauchspeicheldrüse, and the gut in three parts (der Blinddarm, der Dünndarm, der Dickdarm). One thing to watch: das Herz is neuter, not masculine like you'd expect for an organ, and it declines oddly in the genitive and dative (des Herzens, dem Herzen), so it's worth learning as an exception early.

How to learn this set
Most of these words are compounds built from a small set of roots, so learn the roots and the rest falls into place: Darm (intestine) gives you Blinddarm, Dünndarm, and Dickdarm; Blut (blood) gives you Blutgefäß and combines into Herz-Kreislauf territory; Schlag (beat/strike) shows up in both Herzschlag and Schlagader. Gender also clusters usefully: almost every compound ending in -darm, -schlag, or -gefäß takes der or das based on its last component, so once you know der Blinddarm, der Dünndarm and der Dickdarm follow for free. For the two verbs here, ausscheiden and pochen, drill them in short example sentences (der Puls pochte; der Körper scheidet Abfallstoffe aus) rather than as isolated infinitives, since their meaning shifts a lot with context.

Frequently asked questions
Is Herz masculine or neuter in German?
Neuter: das Herz. It's one of the few body-part nouns that isn't masculine, and it takes an unusual -ens ending in the genitive (des Herzens).
What's the difference between Dünndarm and Dickdarm?
Der Dünndarm is the small intestine and der Dickdarm is the large intestine (colon). German names them by thickness, not by the English small/large-organ logic, so don't translate literally word for word.
What does ausscheiden mean in a medical context?
In the body, ausscheiden means to excrete or eliminate waste, as in der Körper scheidet Giftstoffe aus. Outside medicine, the same verb also means to retire from a competition or be eliminated from a tournament.
