German Mental Health Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of psychological strain and treatment, from everyday words like die Belastung (strain, the thing that piles up before burnout) to clinical terms like die Neurose and der Nervenzusammenbruch. One trap: die Sucht means addiction, not "search" (that's die Suche) - easy to mix up since they're spelled almost the same and both come from the same old root meaning "sickness," not from suchen.

How to learn this set
Notice how many of these words are built from Sucht and its family: die Sucht, süchtig, die Magersucht - once you know Sucht means "addiction/craving," Magersucht (literally "thin-craving") makes obvious sense as anorexia. A second pattern worth drilling separately: the abstract Latin/Greek imports like die Phobie, die Manie, die Neurose, die Lethargie, die Katalepsie are all feminine and mostly keep their English spelling minus small tweaks (-ie instead of -ia or -y), so learn that spelling shift as a rule rather than memorizing each word's gender from scratch. Pair opposites when you drill: die Belastung/die Entlastung, and süchtig/neurotisch as the two adjectives in a set of otherwise all nouns.

Frequently asked questions
Is die Sucht the same as die Abhängigkeit?
They overlap but aren't identical: die Sucht is the addiction or craving itself (die Magersucht, die Spielsucht), while die Abhängigkeit is the state of dependency, often used in clinical or drug contexts like physische Abhängigkeit.
What's the difference between die Belastung and der Stress?
Der Stress is the general English loanword for stress, while die Belastung specifically means the load or burden causing it - you'd say psychische Belastung for mental strain, and die Entlastung is what relieves it.
Why is das Trauma neuter when most illness words are feminine?
Das Trauma kept the neuter gender of its original Greek form (like das Drama, das Thema), which is a small but regular pattern for Greek loanwords ending in -a in German.
