How to learn this set
Almost every noun here is built from Selbst- (self) plus a second noun: Selbstvertrauen (trust), Selbstachtung (respect/esteem), Selbstbild (image), Selbstwertgefühl (worth-feeling), Selbstgefühl (feeling), Selbstzweifel (doubt). Learn the second half on its own first (das Vertrauen, das Gefühl, der Zweifel), since those roots recur all over German, then snap Selbst- onto the front. For the adjectives, sort them by intensity on one axis: selbstsicher and souverän sit at the confident end, schüchtern and zaghaft are mild, unsicher and zögerlich describe hesitation in the moment. Drill trauen separately since it's the odd one out grammatically, a reflexive verb (sich trauen) rather than a noun or adjective, and it's what you actually use to say "I don't dare."

What's the difference between Selbstvertrauen and Selbstbewusstsein?
Selbstvertrauen is trust in your own abilities, closer to "self-confidence" in a practical sense (I trust I can do this). Selbstbewusstsein is broader, covering overall self-assuredness and how you carry yourself, and despite looking like "self-conscious," it does not mean shy or awkward.
Is Selbstbewusstsein a false friend?
Yes. In English "self-conscious" usually means awkwardly aware of yourself in a negative way, but German Selbstbewusstsein means confident. For the negative sense, use unsicher or schüchtern instead.
What's the difference between Selbstwertgefühl and Selbstachtung?
Selbstwertgefühl is your general sense of self-worth, how valuable you feel as a person. Selbstachtung is closer to self-respect, tied more to your own standards and conduct than to a feeling of value.
