German Directions & Orientation Vocabulary
This set covers the words you need to give and understand directions in German: links, rechts, geradeaus, and the prepositions that pin things down in space like zwischen, hinter, and gegenüber. One thing that trips up English speakers is gegenüber, which can mean both "opposite" (the bakery is gegenüber the bank) and "towards" in a more abstract sense (my attitude gegenüber this problem), so don't lock it into just one translation.

How to learn this set
Several words here form pairs built on the same root with opposite meanings: oben/unten (above/below), links/rechts (left/right), drüben (over there) pairing conceptually with hin (towards). Drill these as pairs rather than single words, since you'll almost always need to contrast them when actually giving directions. Also notice that hinter, neben, and zwischen are two-way prepositions that take dative for location and accusative for movement toward, so practice each one in a static sentence (der Stadtplan liegt zwischen den Büchern) and a motion sentence (leg den Stadtplan zwischen die Bücher) to feel the case switch.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between hin and her in German?
Hin means motion away from the speaker, her means motion toward the speaker. In this set you see hin (there, towards) and its combined forms like heraus (out, toward the speaker), which is why German verbs often split direction into two separate pieces where English just uses one word like "out."
What is the difference between links and rechts as adjectives vs directions?
As directions (turn left, it's on the right), links and rechts are used exactly as you'd expect, without endings. They only take adjective endings when describing a noun directly, like "die linke Hand," which isn't part of everyday direction-giving.
Is Stadtplan the same as Karte?
Stadtplan specifically means a city map, showing streets for walking or driving around town. Karte is the broader word for map (or menu, or card), so a hiking map or world map would be eine Karte, not ein Stadtplan.
