German Neighbourhood & Living Areas Vocabulary
This set covers how Germans talk about where they live, from der Stadtteil (city district) down to der Vorort (suburb) and the informal der Speckgürtel (commuter belt around a city). English speakers often collapse der Bewohner and der Einwohner into one word, "resident", but German splits them: an Einwohner belongs to a city or country, a Bewohner belongs to a specific building or area. Getting that distinction right will make your German sound much more precise.

How to learn this set
Several words here share the same root idea but shift with prefixes and compounds: Wohnort builds directly on wohnen (to live), while Bewohner and Einwohner both come from wohnen too, just with be- and ein- doing different jobs. Group die Gegend, das Gebiet, and die Region together and drill them with real German place descriptions, since their overlap is where most learners slip up. Note that der Vorort, der Stadtteil, and das Viertel form a rough scale from suburb to district to neighborhood quarter, so learning them as a set (city > Stadtteil > Viertel > Vorort) beats memorizing them alone. Speckgürtel and Quartier are lower-frequency but worth learning as fixed images: Speckgürtel always means the ring around a city, never literal bacon.

What is the difference between der Bewohner and der Einwohner?
Der Einwohner is a resident of a town, city, or country, someone counted in population statistics. Der Bewohner is a resident of a specific building, flat, or smaller area, like an apartment block or a Viertel. A city has Einwohner, a house has Bewohner.
What is the difference between die Gegend and das Gebiet?
Die Gegend is a loose, everyday way to talk about an area, like 'in dieser Gegend' (around here). Das Gebiet is more formal or technical, used for defined regions, zones, or fields of expertise. You'd say ein Naturschutzgebiet, not eine Naturschutzgegend.
What does Speckgürtel mean literally and why is it called that?
It literally means 'bacon belt', a slightly informal, colorful term for the ring of wealthier suburbs and commuter towns around a big city. The 'fat' image comes from these areas looking prosperous compared to the city core.
