German Sightseeing & Landmarks Vocabulary

How to learn this set
Several nouns here share the -ung or -er pattern that marks German word formation: die Führung comes from führen (to lead), and der Reiseführer stacks Reise (journey) onto Führer (guide) to mean travel guide, either the book or the person. Notice too how besichtigen, das Museum, die Galerie, and der Tourismus all pull double duty as near-cognates you can recognize on sight, so spend your drilling time instead on the ones that don't look like English: die Aussicht, der Rundumblick, and der Stolperstein. Group Burg, Schloss, Ruine, and Denkmal together and quiz yourself on which structure fits which word, since mixing those up is the most common mistake at this level.

What is the difference between Burg and Schloss in German?
A Burg is a fortified castle built for defense, usually on a hill, like a medieval stronghold. A Schloss is a stately palace built for comfort and show, often with gardens, though English lumps both together as 'castle'. If it has thick walls and a defensive purpose, it's a Burg; if it's grand and ornamental, it's a Schloss.
Is Museum masculine or neuter in German?
Das Museum is neuter, like most nouns borrowed from Latin ending in -um. This pattern also covers das Podium and das Zentrum.
What does Stolperstein mean and why is it in a sightseeing list?
A Stolperstein (literally 'stumbling stone') is a small brass memorial plaque set into the pavement in front of buildings, marking where victims of the Nazis last lived. You'll see them across German cities, and they're often part of city tours, which is why the word shows up alongside Denkmal and Sehenswürdigkeit.
