German Shops & Businesses Vocabulary
This set covers the shops you'd actually walk into on a German street: die Bäckerei for bread, der Metzger for meat, die Buchhandlung for books, plus general words like der Laden and das Geschäft that just mean "shop." One trap here is der Kiosk, which looks and sounds like the English "kiosk" but in German usually means a small stand selling newspapers, snacks, and cigarettes, not an information booth.

How to learn this set
Notice that most of the specific shop names are feminine and end in -ei or -ung: die Bäckerei, die Buchhandlung, die Drogerie. That's a real pattern, not a coincidence, so when you learn a new German shop word, betting on "die" plus one of those endings will often be right. Separately, drill der Laden and das Geschäft together since they overlap in meaning but not in gender, and that mismatch is exactly what trips people up in speech. For der Metzger vs. der Fleischhauer, just tag one as "Germany" and one as "Austria" in your head rather than treating them as two separate words to memorize.

What's the difference between der Laden and das Geschäft?
Both mean shop or store and are often interchangeable. Laden leans slightly smaller or more casual (a corner shop), while Geschäft can also mean the business itself, as in the deal or transaction, not just the physical space.
Is Drogerie the same as a pharmacy?
No. Die Drogerie sells toiletries, cosmetics, and household items, while a pharmacy for prescription medicine is die Apotheke, which isn't in this set. Mixing the two up is a common beginner mistake.
