German Emergencies & First Aid Vocabulary

This set covers the vocabulary you need to describe, report, and act in an emergency: der Notfall, der Krankenwagen, and der Sanitäter are the core building blocks, alongside verbs like retten and bergen. One distinction worth flagging right away: German splits 'rescue' into retten (save someone from danger) and bergen (recover a body or object, often after the danger has passed), a difference English collapses into one verb.

How to learn this set

Notice how many words here are compounds built from Not (need/emergency): Notfall, Notruf, and the standalone word Not itself all share that root, so once you know Not means "acute need," the compounds explain themselves. Der Krankenwagen and der Sanitäter both hide krank (sick) or a Latin root, showing how German prefers to build new words from existing ones rather than borrow. Drill retten and bergen together as a pair since mixing them up is the most common learner mistake in this set. For genders, most of the equipment and people nouns (der Krankenwagen, der Sanitäter, der Notruf) are masculine, which is worth memorizing as a group rather than word by word.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Notfall and Unfall in German?

Der Notfall is any emergency situation, medical or otherwise, that needs immediate action, like a heart attack or a gas leak. Der Unfall is specifically an accident, something like a car crash or a fall. Every Unfall can turn into a Notfall, but not every Notfall involves an accident.

Why is Krankenwagen not translated literally?

Krankenwagen breaks down as krank (sick) + Wagen (vehicle), so literally it's a sick-vehicle, which is just how German built the word for ambulance. There's no separate borrowed word like 'ambulance' in English; Germans also say Rettungswagen (rescue vehicle) as an alternative.

Is Unglück the same as Unfall?

No. Das Unglück leans toward misfortune or disaster, including things with no clear cause like a natural disaster, while der Unfall is a concrete accident, usually involving vehicles, people, or machinery. Ein Unglück can describe the bad luck around an event; ein Unfall is the event itself.
