German Household Appliances Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of running a household full of electrical stuff: die Waschmaschine, der Stecker, die Steckdose, and the everyday verbs you need to talk about turning things on and plugging them in. One trap: anstellen looks like it should mean "turn on" (like anschalten), but it actually means "to employ/hire" - the verb you want for switching on a device is anmachen, einschalten, or anschalten.

How to learn this set
Notice the cluster of near-synonyms for "turn on": anmachen, einschalten, and an sein (for the state of being on, not the action). Drill them by sorting into "action" vs "state" - anmachen/einschalten are things you do to a device, an sein is what the device then is. Also group der Stecker (the plug you hold) with die Steckdose (the socket it goes into) - both come from stecken (to stick/insert), which explains why one is masculine (the object you insert) and the other feminine (the container).

What is the difference between anmachen and einschalten?
Both mean to turn something on, and in casual speech they are often interchangeable for appliances. Einschalten is slightly more formal or technical (used in manuals, for Geräte in general), while anmachen is what you'd actually say to a friend about turning on die Lampe or das Licht.
Why is der Stecker masculine but die Steckdose feminine?
Both come from the verb stecken (to stick/plug in), but der Stecker takes the standard -er agent-noun ending pattern (like der Fahrer), which is masculine, while die Steckdose is a compound ending in die Dose (can/box), which is always feminine regardless of what's attached to it.
What's the difference between der Strom and die Elektrizität?
Der Strom is the everyday word Germans use for electricity/power in daily life (der Strom ist weg = the power is out), while die Elektrizität is the more abstract, technical term you'd find in a physics textbook. For anything at home, use der Strom.
