German Renting & Moving House Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you actually need to rent a flat and move house in Germany: die Wohnung, der Vermieter, die Miete, der Umzug. One thing that trips up English speakers is der Vermieter versus der Mieter: they look almost identical but mean landlord and tenant, opposite sides of the same lease.

How to learn this set
Notice how mieten (to rent) and vermieten (to rent out) share a root but the ver- prefix flips who's doing what to whom, and the same pattern gives you der Mieter/der Vermieter and die Vermietung. Also drill einziehen (move in) against umziehen (move house) as a pair, since German splits what English lumps together as "move." For genders, group die Miete, die Wohnung, and die Vermietung together as feminine, then set der Vermieter, der Mieter, and der Schlüssel as masculine, so you're not memorizing 21 nouns one by one.

What is the difference between mieten and vermieten?
mieten means to rent something as the tenant (ich miete eine Wohnung = I'm renting an apartment). vermieten means to rent something out as the owner (der Vermieter vermietet die Wohnung = the landlord rents out the apartment). Same root, opposite direction.
What's the difference between der Vermieter and der Mieter?
Der Vermieter is the landlord, the one who owns and rents out the property. Der Mieter is the tenant, the one paying rent to live there. The ver- prefix marks the owner's side of the deal.
Is Wohnung the same as Apartment in German?
Mostly yes, both mean apartment/flat, but Wohnung is the everyday word used in leases, ads, and conversation, while Apartment tends to describe smaller or more upscale units, like a studio. When in doubt, use Wohnung.
