German Housework & Cleaning Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of cleaning house and dealing with waste, from everyday verbs like putzen and aufräumen to the specific nouns Germans use for trash. One thing to watch: der Müll and der Abfall both mean "garbage" but German splits waste further than English does, giving you separate words for the truck (die Müllabfuhr), the bin (die Mülltonne), and even recyclables specifically (der Wertstoffe). There's also a false-friend trap with die Reinigung, which means "cleaning" but is also what Germans call the dry cleaner's shop.

How to learn this set
Notice that most of the trash-related nouns build on Müll or Abfall as a root: Müllabfuhr, Mülltonne, and Mülleimerdeckel all stack onto Müll, while Abfalleimer and Abfallwirtschaft do the same with Abfall. Once you know Müll = trash and Eimer = bucket/bin, Mülleimerdeckel breaks down easily into trash-bin-lid rather than needing to be memorized whole. For the verbs, drill putzen and aufräumen side by side since English blurs them into one idea (clean) but German keeps them separate: putzen is scrubbing something clean, aufräumen is putting things back in order. Save besudeln and die Jauchegrube for last since they're rare, vivid words you'll mainly recognize in context rather than need to produce yourself.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Müll and Abfall in German?
They're largely interchangeable and both mean garbage or waste. Müll is more common in everyday speech, while Abfall shows up more in official or technical contexts like die Abfallwirtschaft (waste management).
What is the difference between putzen and aufräumen?
Putzen means to physically clean something, like scrubbing a surface or washing a window. Aufräumen means to tidy up or put things back in their place, so a messy desk needs aufräumen, not putzen.
Why does die Reinigung mean both cleaning and dry cleaner's?
Die Reinigung literally means cleaning as an activity, but Germans use it as shorthand for die chemische Reinigung, the dry cleaning shop. Context tells you which one is meant.
