German Motivation & Willpower Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of getting yourself to do things: die Motivation, der Ehrgeiz, and der Wille, plus the follow-through words like durchhalten and das Durchhaltevermögen. One trap for English speakers: der Antrieb and der Trieb both look like "drive" in a car sense, but here they mean psychological drive or instinct, not a driveway or a golf swing.

How to learn this set
Group the abstract nouns by gender instead of memorizing them one by one: die Disziplin, die Motivation, and die Anstrengung are all feminine, while der Wille, der Ehrgeiz, der Fleiß, der Antrieb, der Elan, and der Trieb are all masculine, so you're really only tracking das Durchhaltevermögen and der Beweggrund as the ones needing extra attention. Notice also that motivieren gives you both motiviert (motivated, the adjective) and die Motivation (the noun) from one root, and the same pattern shows up with diszipliniert next to die Disziplin. For streben and trachten, drill them together since they're near-synonyms for "to strive," but streben is far more common in everyday speech and trachten shows up mostly in fixed phrases like nach etwas trachten.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between der Antrieb and der Trieb?
Der Antrieb is drive in the sense of motivation or momentum toward a goal, like career drive. Der Trieb leans toward instinct or urge, often biological, as in der Überlebenstrieb (survival instinct).
Is der Ehrgeiz positive or negative in German?
It can go either way depending on context, similar to English ambition. Ehrgeizig used alone is usually neutral or positive, but übertriebener Ehrgeiz (excessive ambition) carries a negative edge.
What's the difference between die Anstrengung and die Motivation?
Die Motivation is the reason or drive behind an action, while die Anstrengung is the physical or mental effort you actually put in. You can have viel Motivation but still find something eine große Anstrengung.
