German Stress & Pressure Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of being overwhelmed, from everyday words like gestresst and hektisch to the specific mechanics of what stress does: aufzehren (to burn you out), überlasten (to overload), and lahmlegen (to bring everything to a standstill). One trap for English speakers: der Stress is masculine, not neuter as you might expect from a borrowed English word, and it never takes a plural the way English casually says stresses.

How to learn this set
Several verbs here share the prefix über- (überfordern, überlasten), which always signals "too much" - once you know that, you can guess the meaning of new über- words on sight. Also group der Stress, der Druck, and die Hektik as your three basic nouns, then treat die Überforderung, die Bewältigung, and die Erschöpfung as the heavier, more formal nouns built from verbs you already know (überfordern, bewältigen, erschöpfen). Drill the verb/noun pairs together rather than separately, since German constantly recycles a verb stem into an abstract noun with -ung.

Frequently asked questions
Was ist der Unterschied zwischen Stress und Druck?
Stress is the general state of being overwhelmed, while der Druck (pressure) is often the specific cause pushing on you, like deadlines or expectations. You can have Druck von außen (pressure from outside) that leads to Stress as a result.
Ist der Stress männlich oder weiblich?
Der Stress is masculine, like most loanwords ending in a consonant borrowed from English. Der Druck is also masculine, which helps if you group them together as the two core 'pressure' nouns in German.
Was bedeutet überfordern auf Deutsch?
Überfordern means to demand too much of someone, to overtax their abilities. Die Aufgabe überfordert mich means the task is too much for me, and the noun form die Überforderung describes that state of being overwhelmed.
