German Books & Literature Vocabulary
This set covers the words you need to talk about books as physical objects and as literary forms: der Roman, das Gedicht, die Erzählung, die Fabel. One trap for English speakers is der Verlag, which means the publishing house or company, not a person; the person is der Autor or die Autorin. Another is die Geschichte, which does double duty for both "story" and "history," so context alone tells you which one is meant.

How to learn this set
Almost every genre word here is either der or die, with no das in sight: der Roman, die Ballade, die Fabel, die Erzählung, die Chronik. That's not an accident: German literary genre terms skew feminine or masculine, so if you're guessing, das is usually the wrong bet. Group das Buch, das Kapitel, das Lexikon, and das Glossar together instead, since these are the neuter "reference object" nouns, then drill the genre words separately by gender. For das Gebetbuch and der Einband, notice the compound logic: Gebet (prayer) + Buch, and Ein- (bound in) + -band (volume), which makes them easier to reconstruct than memorize.

Is der Roman a false friend in German?
No, but watch the meaning: der Roman means novel, not the English 'romance' or the adjective 'roman'. A romantic story is eine Liebesgeschichte, and a Roman is any novel, from crime fiction to literary fiction.
What is the difference between die Geschichte and die Erzählung?
Die Geschichte covers both 'history' and 'story' in a general sense, so it can mean a bedtime story or a whole historical era. Die Erzählung is more specific: a short story or narrative, the kind of text you'd find in a literature class.
Why is der Verlag not der Autor's own business?
Der Verlag is the publishing house, the company that prints and sells the book, while der Autor or die Autorin is the person who wrote it. English speakers often confuse Verlag with 'publisher' meaning a person, but in German that role is der Herausgeber (editor/publisher of a specific edition).
