German Languages & Translation Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you need to talk about languages themselves, not just speak them: die Sprache, die Übersetzung, and der Wortschatz. One trap for English speakers is der Ausdruck, which means both "expression" (a phrase) and "printout" from a printer, so context decides which one you mean.

How to learn this set
Notice how many words here are built from die Sprache: die Fremdsprache, die Muttersprache, die Zweitsprache, die Gebärdensprache. Learn the base word's gender once (die) and the compounds come free, since German compound nouns always inherit the gender of their last component. Do the same with das Wörterbuch, its plural die Wörterbücher, and the umlaut shift, that vowel change is worth drilling out loud a few times so it sticks. For the C1 words like die Semantik, die Semiologie, and sinngemäß, don't try to memorize definitions in isolation, instead write one sentence using each so you fix how they actually get used.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Muttersprache and Erstsprache?
Muttersprache (mother tongue) is the everyday word Germans use for the language you grew up speaking. Erstsprache (first language) shows up in linguistics or official contexts, but in normal conversation people say Muttersprache.
Is Dolmetscher the same as Übersetzer?
No. Der Übersetzer translates written text, and der Dolmetscher translates spoken language on the spot. If you're learning die Übersetzung (translation) as a written document, the person doing that job is der Übersetzer.
Why is Sprache feminine and Wörterbuch neuter?
There's no rule that predicts this from meaning alone, you just have to memorize der/die/das with the noun. Compound nouns like Wörterbuch take the gender of their last part (das Buch), which is why das Wörterbuch, die Fremdsprache, and die Muttersprache all follow that pattern from their root words Sprache and Buch.
