German Computers & Software Vocabulary
This set covers the basic vocabulary for using and talking about computers, from der Computer and die Datei up to more technical words like die Bandbreite and die Cybersicherheit. One easy mix-up: das Programm is neutral, not masculine, even though most other tech nouns you'll meet here default to der or die, so it's worth flagging on its own.

How to learn this set
Most of the nouns here are compounds built from smaller pieces, and once you know the pieces, the meanings stop needing memorization: die Benutzeroberfläche is Benutzer (user) + Oberfläche (surface), die Datenbank is Daten (data) + Bank (a store, like a bench you keep things on), and der Datenschutz is Daten + Schutz (protection). Drill Daten- as a prefix on its own, since it feeds die Datenbank, der Datenschutz, and der Datenabgleich. For the verbs, notice that installieren, speichern, and löschen all take a direct object without a preposition, so practice them with a file or program plugged in: eine Datei speichern, ein Programm installieren, eine Datei löschen.

Is der Computer or der Rechner more common in German?
Der Computer is the everyday word you'll hear and see most often. Der Rechner is also common, especially in technical or work contexts, and it doubles as the word for a calculator, so context tells you which meaning is meant.
What's the difference between klicken and anklicken?
Klicken is the general verb for clicking, as in clicking a mouse. Anklicken means to click on something specific, like a link or an icon, and takes a direct object: du klickst den Link an.
Why does löschen mean both 'extinguish' and 'delete'?
German uses one verb for both because the core idea is making something go out or disappear, whether that's a fire or a file. Feuer löschen is putting out a fire, and eine Datei löschen is deleting a file.
