German Opinions & Arguments Vocabulary
This set covers how to state, defend, and challenge a position in German: die Meinung, der Standpunkt, and die Begründung give you the nouns for opinion, viewpoint, and justification, while begründen and befürworten give you the verbs to back them up. One trap for English speakers: raten does not mean "to rate" but "to guess" or "to advise" - and empfehlen is the verb you actually want for recommending something.

How to learn this set
Several words here share the root -sprechen or a similar structural core: besprechen (discuss) is just be- plus sprechen, and diskutieren/die Diskussion/die Debatte form a noun-verb cluster you should learn together rather than separately. Also drill empfehlen alongside its irregular forms empfiehlt and hat empfohlen as one unit, since the vowel change (e to ie) trips up learners who only memorize the infinitive. For the der/die/das nouns, group them by gender first - die Aussage, die Meinung, die Begründung, die Diskussion, die Kritik, die Debatte are all feminine, which is a useful pattern since abstract nouns ending in -ung, -ion, and -ik are reliably die in German.
