German Writing & Spelling Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of putting words on paper: der Buchstabe, die Schrift, and der Rechtschreibfehler take you from single letters to full pages and the mistakes you make along the way. One trap for English speakers is der Text versus die Schrift: Text is content, Schrift is the visual form of writing (handwriting, a font, a script), and mixing them up makes German sentences sound off. Another surprise is that Anführungszeichen and the folksy Gänsefüßchen both just mean quotation marks.

How to learn this set
Notice that der Buchstabe and das Wort scale up predictably: letters make words, words make der Satz, sentences make der Text. Drill the compound der Rechtschreibfehler by splitting it into its parts (recht + schreiben + Fehler) since that pattern of noun-stacking around schreiben repeats across this set, including aufschreiben and Textsorte. Also group die Formulierung and die Umschreibung together: both describe rewording something, one more neutral, one closer to paraphrasing, so practice them side by side rather than in isolation.

Anführungszeichen oder Gänsefüßchen: what's the difference?
None. Anführungszeichen is the formal term for quotation marks; Gänsefüßchen (literally 'little goose feet') is the everyday, slightly playful word for the same thing. You'll hear Gänsefüßchen far more in casual speech.
What's the difference between der Text and die Textsorte?
Der Text is a piece of writing itself, like an email or an essay. Die Textsorte is the category it belongs to, such as a letter, a report, or a review. German exams often ask you to name the Textsorte before analyzing the Text.
Is buchstabieren the same as spelling in English?
Yes, but it only means spelling a word out loud letter by letter, like on the phone. For 'spelling' as in orthography rules, German uses Rechtschreibung instead.
