How to learn this set
Several names here are compounds worth breaking apart: der Fischadler (fish + eagle) is the osprey, der Nashornvogel (rhino-horn + bird) is the hornbill, and der Schnepfenstrauß (snipe + ostrich) is the German word for kiwi. Once you see the logic in Fischadler and Nashornvogel, guessing the meaning of new bird compounds gets much easier, since German builds animal names the same way it builds most other nouns. Drill der Waldkauz and die Schleiereule together since both are owls but differ in habitat (forest vs. barn) rather than size or color, which is the distinction German speakers actually use to tell them apart in conversation. The verb ziepen is rare enough that you'll get more out of hearing it in a sentence about a specific bird's chirp than trying to memorize it in isolation.
