German Landscape & Terrain Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you need to describe outdoor terrain in German, from der Berg (mountain) and das Tal (valley) down to smaller features like der Hügel (hill) and die Böschung (embankment). One trap: das Gebirge looks like it should mean "mountain" but it's the collective term for a mountain range, while der Berg is the single peak. Another: die Klippe means a coastal cliff or rock face, not any old cliff edge, so use der Abgrund for a sheer drop or precipice inland.

How to learn this set
Notice how many of these terrain nouns cluster by gender through their suffix or root: der Wald, der Hügel, der Abgrund and der Dschungel are all masculine, while die Landschaft, die Küste, die Insel and die Böschung are feminine. Drilling der Berg alongside its compound das Gebirge is worth doing explicitly, since the shift from singular peak to collective range is a pattern you'll meet again with other Ge- collective nouns. Group der Wald, das Dickicht, das Gestrüpp and der Dschungel together too, since they form a rough scale from "forest" to "impassable jungle" and mixing them up changes the meaning more than a beginner might expect. For die Kaskade and die Klippe, learn them with a real image of a waterfall or a coastal rock, since both have narrower meanings than their English-looking cognates suggest.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between der Berg and das Gebirge in German?
Der Berg is a single mountain or peak. Das Gebirge is the collective word for a mountain range or mountainous region, so you'd say die Alpen sind ein Gebirge, not ein Berg.
Is die Klippe the same as der Abgrund?
No. Die Klippe specifically means a cliff or jagged rock, usually on a coastline. Der Abgrund is a chasm, abyss, or sheer drop, and it doesn't need to be near water.
What does das Grundgestein mean and is it different from der Stein?
Der Stein is a general word for stone or rock, the kind you can pick up. Das Grundgestein (also das Grundgebirge) is a geological term for bedrock, the solid rock layer beneath soil and loose sediment.
