German Weather & Forecast Vocabulary
This set covers everyday weather talk: describing conditions with words like bewölkt and windig, and naming what's happening in the sky with der Blitz and der Donner. One trap here is scheinen, which means both "to shine" (die Sonne scheint) and "to seem" (es scheint zu regnen) - two unrelated meanings English speakers keep separate but German doesn't.

How to learn this set
Most of the weather nouns you'll actually use are neuter or masculine, not feminine: das Wetter, der Regen, der Wind, der Blitz, der Donner. Only die Wolke breaks the pattern, so it's worth memorizing on its own. For the adjectives, drill them as opposite pairs instead of a flat list: heiß/kalt, hell/dunkel, nass/trocken, sonnig/bewölkt. That mirrors how you'll actually use them, checking one box or the other when you describe a day.

What's the difference between kalt and kühl?
Kalt is plainly cold, the kind you complain about. Kühl is mild, refreshing coldness, like a cool evening you'd actually enjoy.
Is der Blitz just lightning?
As a weather word yes, but Blitz also means a photo flash or any sudden flash, and blitzen covers both the sky lightning up and a camera going off.
Why does scheinen mean both shine and seem?
It's one verb with two established uses in German: die Sonne scheint (the sun shines) and es scheint kalt zu sein (it seems to be cold). Context tells you which one is meant, there's no separate word to learn.
