German Insects & Small Creatures Vocabulary

How to learn this set
Notice how many of these are feminine nouns: die Spinne, die Wespe, die Motte, die Raupe, die Made, die Libelle, die Milbe, die Zikade, die Tarantel, die Nacktschnecke. Drill the outliers separately since they'll trip you up: der Wurm, der Marienkäfer, der Parasit, der Skorpion, der Skarabäus are all masculine, and das Insekt, das Glühwürmchen are neuter. For die Spinnentiere (arachnids), remember it's the plural umbrella term that covers die Spinne, der Skorpion, and die Milbe - useful if you ever need to explain that a spider isn't technically an insect (das Insekt) in German either.

Is Spinne masculine or feminine in German?
Die Spinne is feminine. Almost all German words for crawling insects and arachnids in this set follow the same pattern: die Wespe, die Motte, die Raupe, die Made.
What's the difference between Made and Raupe in German?
Die Made is a maggot or grub, the legless larva you'd find in rotting food or fishing bait. Die Raupe is specifically a caterpillar, the crawling larval stage of a butterfly or moth, and it has visible legs and often color patterns.
Why is Wurm masculine when most bug words are feminine?
There's no grammatical rule that predicts this, German noun gender for animals is largely historical and has to be memorized. Der Wurm just happens to be one of the few masculine exceptions in a set otherwise dominated by feminine nouns like die Spinne and die Wespe.
