German Wild Animals Vocabulary
This set moves past the basics of bear, wolf, fox, lion, and deer into the animals and terms you need to actually discuss wildlife in German: der Dachs (badger), die Hyäne (hyena), das Gürteltier (armadillo). One trap for English speakers is der Katzenbär, the red panda: it's not a bear or a cat, and the literal 'cat-bear' name has nothing to do with either English term for the animal.

How to learn this set
Several animals here are compounds you can take apart: Gürteltier is literally 'belt-animal' (armadillo's armor plates), Ochsenfrosch is 'ox-frog' (bullfrog), and Katzenbär is 'cat-bear.' Once you see the logic, das Beuteltier (marsupial, from Beutel = pouch) stops being an arbitrary noun and becomes obvious. For gender, don't guess: der Habicht and der Rabe are masculine birds while das Rebhuhn is neuter, so drill the article with each word rather than assuming birds follow one pattern.

Frequently asked questions
Is it der Maulwurf or der Maulwürf?
The singular is der Maulwurf (mole). Maulwürf only shows up as the plural form, die Maulwürfe, so watch that umlaut shift when you learn the word.
What is the German word for wild animals?
Wild animals are wild lebende Tiere or Wildtiere, built from the adjective wild plus Tier. The set also gives you specific ones like der Dachs (badger) and die Hyäne (hyena) instead of just the umbrella term.
Why does German have a separate word for a pack of hounds?
Die Meute originally meant a hunting pack of dogs and still carries that sense, but it also extended to human mobs and crowds. English just uses 'pack' or 'mob' for both, so Meute covers ground that takes two different words in English.
