German Farming & Agriculture Vocabulary

This set covers the vocabulary of working land, from der Bauernhof itself to the tools and processes that keep it running, like der Mähdrescher, die Bewässerung, and die Garbe. One trap for English speakers: der Bauer means farmer, not "boor," and die Plantage keeps its French-derived spelling with an e at the end, unlike the English "plantation."

How to learn this set

Notice how many of these words are compounds built from concrete farm objects: Heugabel (Heu + Gabel, hay + fork), Heuschober (Heu + Schober, hay + shed), and Dreschflegel (dreschen + Flegel, to thresh + flail). Once you know Heu means hay, two words unlock at once, so drill the compound pieces separately before the whole word. For the verbs, roden and abholzen both mean clearing land but differ in scale: roden is grubbing out stumps and roots from a plot, abholzen is clear-cutting a forest, so pair them with a mental image of a garden versus a hillside.

Frequently asked questions

Is der Bauer offensive in German?

No, der Bauer is the standard, neutral word for farmer. It only becomes rude if used to call a person uncultured or rude, similar to calling someone a "peasant" in English, but as an occupation it's completely normal.

What is the difference between Landwirtschaft and Ackerbau?

Landwirtschaft is the general, everyday word for agriculture as a whole, covering crops and livestock. Ackerbau specifically means arable farming or crop cultivation and sounds more technical or old-fashioned, so you'll see it in official contexts more than in conversation.

Why is die Gülle not the same as manure?

Gülle is specifically liquid manure or slurry, a mix of animal excrement and water stored in tanks and sprayed on fields. Solid animal manure is der Mist or der Dung, so German draws a distinction that English usually collapses into one word.
