German Internet & Websites Vocabulary

This set covers the words you need to talk about being online in German, from basics like der Browser and die Suchmaschine to more specific terms like das Lesezeichen for a bookmark. One trap here: der Link looks and sounds like the English word, but Germans also use verknüpfen (to link, connect, associate) in contexts where English would never say "link" — like linking two ideas or pieces of data.

How to learn this set

Group the tech nouns by gender before you drill them: das Internet, das WLAN, and das Passwort are all neuter, which is typical for borrowed English tech terms. Then tackle hochladen and herunterladen together as a pair, since they share the same root (laden, to load) with opposite directional prefixes — practice them in short sentences like "Ich lade die Datei hoch" and "Ich lade das Bild herunter" so the separable prefix placement becomes automatic. Finally, notice how die Verschlüsselung, die Vernetzung, and die Authentifizierung all end in -ung and are feminine; once that pattern clicks, you'll guess the gender of new abstract tech nouns correctly most of the time. Save verknüpfen and der Link for last since they look related but work differently — one's a verb, one's a noun, and mixing them up is an easy mistake.

Frequently asked questions

Is die Homepage the same as die Webseite in German?

Not quite. Die Webseite is any web page, while die Homepage usually means the main or starting page of a site — closer to what English speakers might call a landing page. In everyday speech Germans often blur the line, but if you mean a whole site, Webseite is the safer choice.

Why is das Internet neuter?

There's no real logic to it — like most technology loanwords, das Internet just took the neuter gender when it entered German, similar to das WLAN and das Passwort. You have to learn the article with the word rather than guess from meaning.

What's the difference between hochladen and herunterladen?

Hochladen means to upload (hoch = up) and herunterladen means to download (herunter = down). Both are separable verbs, so in a sentence the prefix jumps to the end: "Ich lade das Foto hoch."
