German Jobs & Professions Vocabulary
This set covers job titles and words for work in general, from der Kellner (waiter) and der Koch (cook) to der Fotograf (photographer) and der Ingenieur (engineer). The tricky part for English speakers is der Beamte: it doesn't just mean "employee," it means a civil servant with a specific legal status in Germany (job security, different pension system), and its female form die Beamtin follows an odd adjective-like declension pattern instead of the usual noun endings.

How to learn this set
Almost every job here comes in pairs: der Kellner/die Kellnerin, der Koch/die Köchin, der Journalist/die Journalistin. The rule is add -in for the female form, and if the male form has an "a," "o," or "u" in the last syllable, it often gets an umlaut too (Koch to Köchin). Drill these as pairs, not single words, so the pattern sticks. Watch der Fachmann and its plural die Fachleute: the plural doesn't just add -e or -er, it swaps to a completely different word, so learn that one separately.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between der Beruf and der Job in German?
Der Beruf is your trained profession, like Ingenieur or Journalist, something you studied or apprenticed for. Der Job is more casual and can mean any paid work, even a student side job, regardless of qualification.
Why does German have a separate word for female professions?
German marks grammatical gender on almost all job nouns, so die Kellnerin (waitress) and die Köchin (female cook) use the -in suffix to mark that the person is female. English just uses one word like 'waiter' or 'cook' for both.
Is der Beamte the same as an employee (der Angestellte)?
No. Der Beamte is a civil servant with a special legal status, things like teachers, judges, or postal officials in certain roles, while der Angestellte is a regular salaried employee without that status.
