German Trades & Manual Work Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary of building sites and workshops, from people like der Maurer and der Dachdecker to the materials and processes they work with, such as der Beton and schweißen. One trap for English speakers is das Werk, which usually means a factory or plant, not a single piece of handiwork the way "work" might suggest in English.

How to learn this set
Several words here cluster around concrete construction: der Beton, die Bewehrung, die Schalung, der Stahlbetonbau, and die Standsicherheit all belong to the same building-site conversation, so learn them together as a mini scene rather than as isolated flashcards. Notice that die Aussteifung, die Bewehrung, die Schalung, and die Setzung are all feminine nouns ending in -ung, a pattern reliable enough that you can guess the gender of new construction terms you meet later. For the verbs schweißen, ätzen, and fräsen, picture the actual physical action (welding sparks, etching acid, milling metal) since these three get mixed up by learners who only memorize dictionary glosses.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between der Handwerker and der Handlanger?
Der Handwerker is a trained tradesman, like a Maurer or Dachdecker, who has done an apprenticeship. Der Handlanger is unskilled help on site, someone who fetches materials and does basic labor, closer to English 'gofer' than 'craftsman'.
What is the difference between der Bau and das Werk in German?
Der Bau refers to construction or a building project itself, as in Stahlbetonbau (reinforced concrete construction). Das Werk usually means a factory or plant, or a finished piece of work, so a Maschinenwerk is a machine plant, not a building site.
Why is Handwerk neuter and Werkstatt feminine?
There's no logical rule, German noun gender for craft and trade words is mostly arbitrary and has to be memorized per word. Das Handwerk, die Werkstatt, and der Amboss each got their gender from centuries of usage, not from any pattern you can predict.
