German Salary & Benefits Vocabulary
This set covers how Germans talk about what's on a payslip and what surrounds it: der Lohn and das Gehalt for basic pay, die Zulage for an allowance on top, and die Gewinnbeteiligung for a cut of company profits. One distinction that catches English speakers off guard is Lohn versus Gehalt: English just says "pay" or "salary" for both, but German splits hourly or output-based pay (Lohn) from a fixed monthly salary (Gehalt), and the compounds Bruttogehalt and Nettogehalt only make sense once you've got that base word down.

How to learn this set
Notice how many words here are built on Gehalt and Lohn: Bruttogehalt, Nettogehalt, Stundenlohn, and Mindestlohn are just the base word with a prefix bolted on, so learning der Lohn and das Gehalt properly gives you four or five words for free. Urlaub does the same job for time off: Urlaubstag, Urlaubsanspruch, and Urlaubsgeld all share that root, so drill Urlaub first and the rest fall into place. For the standalone compounds like Arbeitsvertrag, Gehaltsabrechnung, and Rentenversicherung, try splitting them out loud into their two parts (Arbeit + Vertrag, Gehalt + Abrechnung) since that's usually how a German speaker mentally parses them too.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Gehalt and Lohn in German?
Gehalt is a fixed monthly salary, usually for salaried professionals, and doesn't change based on hours worked. Lohn is pay tied to hours or output, like der Stundenlohn (hourly wage), and is more common for manual or shift work.
What is Urlaubsgeld and Weihnachtsgeld?
Urlaubsgeld is extra money some employers pay on top of your salary specifically for your holiday, and Weihnachtsgeld is a similar bonus paid around Christmas. Neither is legally required in Germany, they depend on your contract or industry.
Is Gehalt masculine or neuter in German?
Das Gehalt is neuter, which trips up a lot of learners since job-related nouns often feel like they should be masculine. Bruttogehalt and Nettogehalt keep the same das, since gender doesn't change when you attach a prefix.
