German Sky, Sun & Stars Vocabulary
This set covers the sky itself and what's in it, from die Sonne and der Mond down to specialist words like die Leuchtkraft (luminosity) and die Hintergrundstrahlung (background radiation). One thing that trips up English speakers: German has separate everyday words for space as emptiness (der Weltraum) and space as the whole universe (das Weltall), a distinction English mostly collapses into just "space" or "the universe."

How to learn this set
Notice how many words here are compounds built on a base noun: Sonnenaufgang and Sonnenuntergang both hide der Aufgang/der Untergang inside them, and Weltraumteleskop is just der Weltraum plus das Teleskop. Once you know the gender of the base word, you often know the gender of the compound, so learn der Raum, der Gang, and das Teleskop as anchor words first. For the C1 vocabulary like die Hemisphäre, das Gestirn, and der Galaxienhaufen, drill them in short phrases (die südliche Hemisphäre, ein fernes Gestirn) rather than as isolated translations, since these are words you'll meet in context, not in casual conversation.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sonnenaufgang der, die, or das?
It's der Sonnenaufgang. The mistake in this list is die Sonnenuntergang and die Sonnenaufgang — both should be der, since they're built from der Aufgang and der Untergang, not from die Sonne.
What's the difference between Weltall, Weltraum, and Kosmos?
Das Weltall leans toward 'the universe' as a whole, der Weltraum is closer to 'outer space' as a place you travel through, and der Kosmos (not in this set) is the more scientific-poetic term. In everyday German they overlap a lot, so don't stress over picking the 'right' one.
Why is Mond masculine but Sonne feminine in German?
It's just grammatical gender, not logic — der Mond and die Sonne have been fixed that way since Old High German. English speakers sometimes flip them by analogy with old poetic English (where the moon can be 'she'), so it's worth memorizing the pair together.
