German Applying for a Job Vocabulary
This set covers the vocabulary you need to actually apply for a job in Germany: die Bewerbung (the application), das Anschreiben (cover letter), and der Lebenslauf (CV) are the core documents, while die Stelle and das Stellenangebot cover the job or vacancy you're applying to. One trap here is bewerben - it's a reflexive verb, so you say sich bewerben (to apply for oneself), not just bewerben, which actually means something closer to 'to advertise' or 'promote' without the reflexive pronoun.

How to learn this set
Notice how many words here share the root -werb- or point toward opposite outcomes: die Bewerbung and der Bewerber come from bewerben, while die Absage and die Zusage use opposite prefixes (ab- vs zu-) attached to the same root -sage. Drill these in pairs rather than alone: Absage/Zusage, Bewerbung/Bewerber, Stelle/Stellenangebot. Also watch der Antragsteller and der Kandidat - both mean applicant/candidate in slightly different contexts, so learn them with a sentence showing which one fits a formal application versus an interview shortlist.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between die Bewerbung and der Bewerber?
Die Bewerbung is the application itself (the documents and process), while der Bewerber is the person doing the applying. If that person is a woman, she's die Bewerberin.
What's the difference between die Absage and die Zusage?
Die Absage is a rejection - you didn't get the job. Die Zusage is the acceptance - you did. The two words share the root -sage (from sagen, to say) but the prefixes ab- and zu- point in opposite directions.
Is der Lebenslauf the same as a resume or CV?
Yes, der Lebenslauf is the standard German term for both CV and resume. It literally means 'life run' - the course your life has taken - and German employers expect it in a specific chronological format, often with a photo.
