One thing that trips up English speakers is der Stift versus der Bleistift: Stift alone can mean any pen or pencil-shaped tool, while Bleistift is specifically a pencil, so don't assume Stift always means pen the way it might look.

How to learn this set
Notice how many of these are compounds built from a base noun plus a school-specific piece: der Schulranzen (Schule + Ranzen), das Schulbuch (Schule + Buch), and der Klassenraum (Klasse + Raum) all reuse the same building blocks. Once you know Schule and Klasse as prefixes, you can guess the gender and meaning of similar compounds you haven't seen yet, since German compounds always take the gender of the last noun in the chain. For die Kreide, der Radiergummi, and der Spitzer, drill them together as "things that live in your Mäppchen," since that's how a German student would group them mentally. Pay separate attention to der Buchstabe, one of the rare weak masculine nouns that takes -n in every case except nominative singular (den Buchstaben, dem Buchstaben), which is worth memorizing on its own rather than lumping in with the regular nouns here.

Der Stift is the general word for pen or pencil-like writing tool, while der Bleistift specifically means pencil (literally 'lead-pen'). In everyday speech, Germans often just say Stift and rely on context, but Bleistift is unambiguous if you need to be precise.
What's the difference between das Heft and das Schulbuch?
Das Heft is the notebook or exercise book students write in, while das Schulbuch is the printed textbook they read from and bring home for homework. You write in the Heft, not in the Schulbuch.
Why is der Schulranzen not die Schulranzen?
Ranzen is a masculine noun on its own (an old word for a bag or pouch), and that gender carries over into the compound der Schulranzen. It's a good example of how compound nouns in German take the gender of their last component.
